blu ray – Is Blu-Ray the End of DVD?
When DVD players first came onto the market they cost an absolute fortune compared to the then current VHS video format. So the process of people converting to DVD was a slow one. Eventually though as costs reduced people started to switch and now nearly everyone has a DVD player in the home.
Now the new kid on the block is Blu-Ray and the whole cycle seems to be happening again. When these players were first introduced there was another format called HD DVD by Toshiba as another option. This however was kicked into touch mainly because Sony included this on the new PS3 console. With so many million of these going into the home the head start it had was just too strong. Recently Toshiba even relented and introduced there first own players as well.
One of the major problems with Blu-Ray was that the cost of the players was a lot of money. Well recently this has started to change and over Christmas and in the January sales decent players have dropped to around £99. There are even some offers that throw in a few free films as well.
DVD Collections
So what happens to the hundreds of DVD film you already have in your collection? Well the good news is that the majority of Blu-Ray players are backwards compatible with DVD discs as well. In fact the new players will in fact upscale the picture quality improving upon your standard picture.
Another major reason that I feel these players are taking over is the price drop recently in HD ready TVs. When buying a television nowadays the majority of us now buy a nice flat screen LCD TV that is HD ready and pretty cheaply as well. So now we have the screen we want to take advantage of it and getting a Ray player is one of those ways.
Lastly another reason Blu-Ray has picked up believe it or not is because of the recession. As more people are staying in to save the pennies they are treating themselves to better home entertainment.
So I do think it is here to stay and DVD isn’t going to hold on for much longer!!
