Kodak Archival Wallets Shield Optical Discs Against Uv Light And Heat Damage – Are You Backing Up Your Data?
This week, I received our first consignment of the new Kodak Archive discs sleeves. These thin synthetic sleeves have been silverized with a metal coating and guard against harmful UV Light and temperature – the packaging states they are a ‘metalised nano layered sleeve and shield against daylight and heat and are environmentally friendly.
There are two factors to think about when you are looking into the archive lifespan of recordable disc and in specific DVD-R, CD and Blueray media – their shelf life and their longevity after burning. You wouldn’t want to record a disc and then pop it undamaged into a case only to come back to it a couple of years later to get a number of cherished photographs or a backup only to find there were media read errors due to media degradation – no one, and nearly all the time this would be more than a disaster, having said that I have in my collection CD’s that I recorded more than 8 years ago and are still top quality – they were not even specifically archive disc and not stored in any very special environment!. Media shelf lifespan is something you have little power over but the quantities of disc media sold these days means that every disc you buy should be quite ‘fresh’ out of the packet.
Burning media for archive backup reasons is a separate matter from burning for production or short term data hand over between workstations. The most regular use of DVDR currently is for archiving of audio and video clips, photos, images, etc, this means that you have to be entirely positive the files can be read/write or played back in a number of years time without the media giving data reading errors.
Believe it or not but the definite life span of a recorded piece of media whether that be a Compact disk, DVD or Bluray disc media depends on storage condition, if humidity and in particular heat are not within factory specifications disc will deteriorate and data will be gone as the optical layer on these types of media is typically an organic dye. However, the guidelines for tolerance on these specifications are fairly forgiving as far as CD, DVD-R and Blueray disc media are concerned. heat as infrared and daylight as UV daylight are
1000
proven to have the most critical effect on disc damage, the most simple reason is to look at how a photo will fade if left in the sun on a desk – much the same can and will happen to your burned discs if left to experience from these 2 detrimental effects.
This is for example why museums prefer to deposit their exhibits contained by cardboard boxes often in temperature and humidity controlled environments, so short of packaging up your recorded discs in blackout materials and placing them in the loft inside a vivarium at a stable temperature you are looking for a different solution to safeguard your discs! The new Kodak sleeves are made of a synthetic type plastic material that has been layered with metal, on the packaging it is described as a ‘metalized nano finish}’ and it looks like the wallets have been sputtered with aluminum or a number of other silver coloured metal. This gives a sleeve or wallet that you can’t see through it’s this finish that keeps temperature out as well as hurtful UV daylight.
So to the results – my results having examined these up-to-the-minute sleeves from Kodak – The Kodak Archival discs sleeves – I am sure that they are going to be a superb addition to the archive plan for those clients and users that have sensitive and treasured data backed up onto DVD, CD and Blueray – they effectively block the daylight from reaching the discs recorded layer and are tremendously thin but resilient. The pouches can also be labeled or written on with a everlasting marker, all round an excellent product and at in the region of £6 for 50 well worth the price to make certain the future of your data, video or photos.
The future archival plan is something everyone should take into account but to be honest most can’t be bothered, so the next time you have some important data on a discs think carefully how you will save it just in case you need to get at it not just in some weeks time but perhaps more than a few years later. Disc drive storage isn’t the best answer to long term data backup, they are notorious for failing at the very moment you could do with that essential photograph or video – and guess what, you to media! People have said that DVDR and CD are on their way out, but in this day and age of everything coming in more and more bigger chunks of data and faster download speeds are we moving to a chuck away way of life in that people consume their download ‘fix’ and immediately scrap it or are there continuously going to be bits you want to retain? Well I say those important photo memories require to be kept back separate away from your PC, discs station or mobile phone (all of which will go wrong at some stage or be lost, stolen or broken and the present best choice to get that is to back it up onto DVD-R, CD or Bluray media and accomplish into the habit of storing these media in your own archival approach, all you need is a media wallet and a few of the Kodak media pouches and your photographic memories are safe for your decendants to look at and grin!
