Where Does The Blueray Format Go Next – Will Movie Piracy Damage It Like The Dvd Format Has Suffered?
Having a short time ago undertook a survey within our buyer base – the findings were to say the least more than a slight unforeseen. I have been in the recordable disc media business ever since its beginning and run quite a few different companies and in that time I thought that I knew a great deal about the consumer of these types of products but clearly not everything!
The conclusions of the investigation were that the in UK market the blueray movies sales represents almost a third that of usual DVD movies, perhaps that is as a consequence of the group surveyed being for the most part technology savvy but I was astounded by the uptake, OK I concede that in terms of takings a Blu-ray title is roughly 2 to 3 times the charge of a normal DVD but its still an astounding jump since this time in 2008. Ever since the finish of HD DVD disks occurred in early 2009 – which were of course the main rival of blu-ray disks – the sales of Blueray movies and recordable discs have rocketed.
The selling cost of standalone Bluray players have fallen a lot over the last 12 months, but the price tag of bluray movies are still paradoxically elevated, this can be seen if you spend time at some of the movie forums – a big percentage of group will still buy software for £10 – £20 and use it to upscale their films rather than spend a couple of hundred £’s on a Bluray player and then have to pay double the price for their film! This in spite of the much greater price tag of a Blueray where compared to that of a DVD movie in the UK at least, prices for Bluray discs are falling faster the other side of the millpond in the USA which is leading to quicker uptake of the format, well we were always 2 steps behind the American customer! Personally as regular readers of my articles will know I am positive that many people don’t realise how much better Blueray is than usual DVD and numerous believe it is only equal to the quality of Sky’s High definition output.
The sales of Blueray recordable media is now doing far better than projected in this credit crunch, it does not help that the Uk market will be the very last main economy out of the recession either.
If I try to work out what is occurring in
1000
the current United kingdom Blu-ray recordable marketplace can be rather complex at the moment. Everybody is saying diverse things, its a bit like the climate change debate! In November UK consumers purchased 462,500 blu-ray disc representing a 165 percent step up over the month of October – although a deal of this is due to seasonal fluctuation and the real information will only be apparent at the end of Q1 2010.
In the European market the sales of Bluray players is likely to triple in 2010, with 2.5 million units sold across Europe – not including the Sony PlayStation 3 which stands as the first choice when it comes to Blu-ray playback in the Uk market. If you compare the takeup of Blueray to that of DVD in its inception Blu-ray outsells DVD by at least 4 to 1 – but remember those where the good old days when we went from VHS to DVD disc!
So in the end, Sony would rather we didn’t copy Blueray movies or games and have gone some way down that road by controlling the price of the recordable Bluray discs keeping it above the £4 mark for much of the last 12 months, nevertheless it has now dropped drastically and it only needs a cheap viable Blu-ray recorder to be launched for the recordable format to genuinely take off. It is at that stage that charges must fall for Blu-ray movies with the take off of copying and piracy and larger volumes of recordable Blu-ray begining to ship. Not a lot of customers will nonetheless have the Blu-ray burners (everyone has the ability to burn DVD these days) and it’s not until a Blu-ray burner is shipped en-mass in PC’s that Hollywood will become concerned – myself I do not expect them to allow the same blunder to be made again as they did with DVD!
