blu ray – You Need a Blu-ray Player For True High Definition Video

If you are looking for the ultimate in High Definition enjoyment at your home there are two items you need to have. The first important one of course is a full 1080p high definition television which can be an LCD model, Plasma or one of the new LEDs. And of course to play a movie and enjoy the full screen of your 1080p high def TV you’ll need a Blue Ray player.

Blu-ray is the type of high def DVD media the movie and television industry chose a couple of years ago as there were two standards hitting the market at about the same time. Blu-ray won out as the disks were able to hold more media information and higher quality over the standard HD DVD competitor. The music industry started releasing movies on both formats and people were forced to choose which player to buy not knowing that one of them would only survive. Does this ring a bell for some of you? Remember Sony Beta and VHS tapes in the 80s?

There are standard DVD players on the market that are not true high def models and perform what is called upconverting. The blu-ray players will upconvert standard DVD movies not in full HD to fill out the screen on your 1080p television.

One of the great features of some of the Blu-ray players is called BD-Live which allows a Blu-ray player to connect to the internet and access content such as TV outtakes or video games from movie or TV studio servers. The ones listing BD-live-ready also have a slot for a memory card or a USB flash drive which is necessary to access that feature.

Another feature will allow BD live players to stream movies from some online services like NetFlix, Amazon Video on demand, Blockbuster on Demand, CinemaNow and Vudu. No more jumping in the car late at night to avoid those late fees!

You can also stream music from Pandoras internet radio, view YouTube videos, news and even traffic. And buying one of these new blu-ray players with internet hookup is a low cost upgrade instead of having to buy a new TV with online access.

Most of these types of blu-ray internet players do require either a wired broadband connection and some models can connect to your homes wireless network. Models made by Samsung and LG have the built in wi-fi connection. Others have a built in ethernet connection on the back. They will work best if you have a faster broadband connection as far as downloading and streaming video. Video files are basically huge of all the types of media you may want to download and save.

You will also want to pay close attention to the inputs and outputs that some of these models have or don’t have. You want to make sure you can hookup to your existing home theater equipment. This information will be on the box or whatever website you may shop on so be sure to look for it. It is best to know, before you pay to have it delivered, exactly what you are getting.

We have noticed that there is a lot of confusion about blu-ray (Blue-ray) spelling. Almost 50% of all Blu-ray searches in Google are done with Blue-ray or Blueray. And within the misspelled searches, Blue-ray is about 80% and Blueray is the other 20%. The numbers from Overture for july are 26708 searches for Blu-ray compared to 8618 for Blue-ray and 1082 for Bluray.

It was a choice made by the Blu-ray disc association to remove the “e” from blue-ray to be able to have a trademark on it. “Blue-ray disc” or “Blueray disc” would have not been so easy. We are wondering if people are searching half the time with “Blue-ray players” or “Blue-ray movies” or even worse “HD DVD vs. Blue-ray”, if they are going to find what they are looking for? They will find results talking about blu-ray, but it’s going to be limited because of the pollution done by sites that have misspelled blu-ray themselves with blue-ray or blueray.

Google and the other search engines can make the translation between “blue-ray and blu-ray” or “blueray and blu-ray” but it is certainly going to hurt the search result. The “did you mean” could have helped but websites writers are doing so much mistakes that there is enough results for “Blue-ray” that the “did you mean” doesn’t pop-up.

An ad by a major retail store in the newspapers last week was announcing the “Samsung Blue-ray player”! Talk about confusing people! All those people that did not knew about the technology are now convinced that the correct spelling is Blue-ray and not Blu-ray. They just run to their computer now and search for Blue-ray and find enough results just like if it was the correct spelling.

Blue-ray may look cool without the “e” but at this point, the only result they have is a major dilution of the internet traffic.

We took a look at the HD DVD camp if they had problems with HDDVD or HDVD. We found those results for july in Overture: 29299 searches for HD DVD against 1527 for HDDVD and only 515 for HDVD. We see that the HD DVD doesn’t have a misspelling problem like the blu-ray camp. We can certainly count that as a bonus for HD DVD in the “HD DVD vs. Blue-ray” war!
