The next generation of blu-ray drives will be compatible with both the 100 & 200 Gigabytes bluray discs along with the other DVD formats. The bluray writable disks usually have sectors and the error correction system is also advanced.

The 1st generation bluray drives have transfer speed of 9 Megabyte per second and the next generation drives will have transfer speed of 18 & 36 MB per second. The blu-ray technology is major addition in the optical storage environment.

The other powerful feature of blu-ray is that its surface has a hard coating. In this way the disk is kept safe from scratches. Advancements are being made to take the recording capacity up to 200 Gigabytes. The blu-ray has more capacity because it has small lazer spot. This lazer spot is about 80 percent smaller than the Digital Versatile Disk (DVD). The 200 GB disk will have additional eight recording layers and each layer will have the capacity of 25 GB.

Work is also being done to speed up the transfer rate to 36 Megabytes per second. This will be a significant addition in the optical media. The blu-ray is very secure & safe storage media and is backed up by the leading vendors of media. The other optical formats require cartridge, but is not required by the blu-ray disk because of the hard-coating. The bluray technology is economical and also provides cost benefits to its users. The surface of bluray discs is conductive and they have resistance to humidity, scratch and extreme temperatures.

Blu-ray is an upcoming and a promising optical storage format used for storing high-definition video and data. Wondering where its name came from? Well, it originated from the blue laser, which is used to read from or write in these types of discs. Let us find out more about this brilliant storage device, the Blu-ray disc, abbreviated as BD.

Blu-ray Discs

With the advent of high-definition television, a digital television broadcasting system, in 1998, there arose a need to record and play high-definition content. During those times, the use of shorter-wavelength lasers was known to facilitate optical storage of higher densities. Soon, Shuji Nakamura, a professor at the Material Department of the College of Engineering, University of California, invented blue laser diodes, which hit the markets much later. The development of Blu-ray disc is attributed to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) that also licenses and establishes format standards for Blu-ray discs.

In the Blu-ray discs of initial years, the data-recording layer is placed close to the surface of the disc, thus making them vulnerable to scratches and contamination. For this reason, the blu-ray discs of those times had to be protected by means of plastic cartridges. The physical specifications of the Blu-ray disc were completed in 2004. In the beginning of 2005, TDK declared of having developed a hard coating polymer for Blu-ray discs, thus eliminating the need of cartridges. Sony and Panasonic followed suit by developing hard-coat technologies.

Blu-ray discs use a blue-colored or rather violet-colored laser that operates at a wavelength of 405 nanometers to read and write data. Owing to the shorter wavelengths of the laser, it is possible to store more data onto these discs. A laser beam is focused on the disc through the numerical aperture of a lens. If the wavelength is reduced and the numerical aperture increased, the laser beam can be focused onto a smaller spot, thus enabling more information to be stored on a smaller area. Hence, despite having similar physical dimensions as those of CDs and DVDs, blu-ray discs facilitate greater data storage. A single layer blue-ray disc can store 25 GB while a dual layer stores as much as 50 GB of data. Isn’t that amazing?

How are Blu-ray disks different from the existing storage media? Current optical storage devices available such as DVDs, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM make use of a red-colored laser to read and write data whereas the Blu-ray discs use a violet-colored laser beam. Blue-ray discs offer higher storage capacities as compared to CDs and DVDs and offer backward compatibility with them.

Even today, the Blu-ray technology is getting updated as per the latest advancements. Engineers have come up with quad-layer discs, which can store as much as 100 GB of data. In 2006, TDK announced to have designed a Blu-ray disc that can store 200 GB of data. Ritek Corporation, a Taiwanese consumer electronics group declared to have devised an optical disc storage process that increases the disk capacity to 10 layers, thus raising the Blu-ray disc capacity to 250 GB. In 2007, Hitachi brought out a 100-GB Blu-ray disc consisting of four layers of 25 GB each. Later that year, Pioneer Corporation came up with a 400 GB Blu-ray disc consisting of 16 data layers, of 25 GB each.

Mini Blu-ray disks, BD9/BD5 Blu-ray discs and AVREC are some of the variants of Blu-ray discs. Mini Blu-ray discs can store around 7.5 GB data, on lines similar to MiniDVDs. BD9 and BD5 contain video and audio streams that are compatible with the Blu-ray format. They are suitable for home users and can be used on conventional DVD players. AVREC is used to store Blu-ray disc compatible content onto standard DVDs. Similar to recordable and writable CDs and DVDs, BD-R and BD-RE discs are also available. BD-R discs can be written just once while BD-RE discs can be erased and recorded many times.

As of December 2008, over 1200 Blu-ray titles have been released in the United States and more that 640 in Japan. Many more Blu-ray titles are expected to be released by 2009. Blu-ray discs have revolutionized the field of data storage. They are here to stay!

This is one way you can compare the two disc formats. You can consider this option for later time since here is a comparative study of the two competing disc technologies, Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD

Both HD DVD and Blu-ray are high-definition optical disc formats, incompatible with each other. They were meant to replace the existing DVD format, which was and still is used by a large user community. Considering the promising features of Blu-ray technology, there are bright chances that Blu-ray discs will replace the existing DVDs. Will HD DVDs still remain in competition with the disc formats being used today? In the opinion of many, Blu-ray discs will continue to dominate the market. Many consider Blu-ray technology as the most probable winner in this race of disc storage formats of today.

HD DVD: High-Definition/Density Versatile Disc is abbreviated as HD DVD. It is an optical disc format that facilitates the storage of high-definition video. The development of the HD DVD format is credited to Toshiba, a prominent multinational organization, working in the field of consumer electronic products. HD DVDs are available in both readable and rewriteable formats. NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft and Intel are some of the other leading names in the computer and electronics industry that promote the HD DVD format.

Blu-ray Disc: It is an optical disc format, which is developed by The Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of consumer electronics and personal computer manufacturers. Blu-ray discs are used for storing high-definition video and data. The technology derives its name from the blue or violet colored laser beam that is used for writing and reading data on these discs. Blu-ray discs can store more data on a relatively lesser space as a short-wavelength laser beam is used to write data onto them.

HD DVD or Blu-ray – Which one is better?

HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs are similar in terms of the higher storage capacities and a superior picture quality offered by them. Their storage capacities are higher than those of CDs and DVDs. However, a single layer HD DVD can store 15 GB data whereas a single-layer Blu-ray disc stores 25 GB data. The storage capacity offered by a disc format is closely linked to the method used to write on the discs. Although there is no difference between the wavelengths of the laser beams used to write on HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs, the ways of focusing the beams onto the discs differ. Both HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs require a laser beam of wavelength 405 nanometers, to write data on them. However, for HD DVDs, the beam is focused through a lens of numerical aperture of 0.65 nanometers while the aperture is of 0.85 nanometers for Blu-ray discs.

HD DVDs offer a maximum bit rate of 36.5 Mbits/sec for raw data transfer while Blu-ray discs offer maximum bit rates of 53.9 Mbits/sec. The maximum bit rates for the transfer of audio and video data is around 48 Mbits/sec for Blu-ray discs while it is about 30.2 Mbits/sec for HD DVDs. The use of lossy audio codecs such as Dolby Digital and DTS and lossless codecs like Linear PCM are mandatory for both HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Most of the audio titles released on Blu-ray discs include Dolby-Digital tracks while those on HD DVDs include Dolby Digital Plus tracks. Both offer a maximum video resolution of 1920×1080. Both support the same three video compression standards, namely MPEG-2, VC-1 and AVC.

As the HD DVD specification has no region coding, an HD DVD manufactured in any part of the world can work in any player. Also there are no restrictions on playing imported HD DVDs in any HD DVD player. It implies that discs from American retailers can be obtained by customers in other regions of the world. On the other hand, Blu-ray discs employ three region codes. About 66% of Blu-ray disc titles are region-free, while 33% use region codes.

In 2007, a hybrid technology supporting both the disk formats was introduced by Warner Bros. It was known as Total HD and was designed to support both the formats on a single disc. A disc of the Total HD technology would place a Blu-ray layer over an HD DVD layer, where the Blu-ray layer would act like a two-way mirror, reflecting enough light for the Blu-ray reader to read and the HD DVD player to ignore. However, later that year, the hybrid technology was declared to be on hold. Let us hope for the design of a disk format that will incorporate the positive attributes of both the Blu-ray discs and HD DVDs and eliminate their shortfalls. Blu-ray Players: are they that Good?

If you are a movie buff (you are, aren’t you?), you may want to look into the new Blu-ray players. They will, of course play back Blu-ray discs in astounding fashion, but what may be even more exciting, they also make your old standard DVDs look like High Definition DVDs.

Thinking about purchasing one of the new Blu-ray DVD players? Are they worth it? If you are a true audiophile, or home theater buff the answer may be in this article.

The Blu-ray players are the next-generation digital video platform. The players and their discs can record, store and play back high-definition video and digital audio, as well as computer data. Their big advantage being the enormous amount of information a Blu-ray disc can hold.

A single-layer Blu-ray disc is about the same size as a standard DVD. However it can hold up to 27 GB of data. This equates to more than two hours of high-definition video or about thirteen hours of standard video.

Another difference is: the standard DVD player has a red laser that reads the DVD. With the Blu-ray DVD player it is a blue laser (technically violet) that reads the disc.

The Blu-ray discs have a much superior picture, and sound than the standard DVD discs. And, best of all they are indestructible. Something the standard DVDs are not. There is a video out that has a fantastic demonstration of this.

First, steel wool was vigorously rubbed over the playing surface of a Blu-ray disc. Then the disc was played, no problem, it played back fine. Next, came the ball point pen. They wrote all over the playing surface…no problem with playback.

After the ball point pen came the pizza cutter. You would think that this would be the end of the disc, but it wasn’t….played back fine. Then came the butcher knife…..no problem, the disc is still around. The last demo was trying to burn the Blu-ray disc. That didn’t work either. The disc was still in excellent playing condition.
The one thing that movie buffs, or audio buffs worry about is a damaged CD or DVD disc. I loaned, my bad, one of my favorite DVDs out to someone, who I thought, would take care of it. They didn’t and I had to replace it.

When you rent out standard DVDs, unless you are the first one to rent them, they usually look like people eat off of them and then use them as Frisbees. Have you ever gotten a bad DVD and it won’t play on your DVD player when you get it home?

The point being, wouldn’t it be nice to know that, no matter what happens to a Blu-ray DVD disc it will faithfully play back like it is brand-new?

Think about the last time you went to your local movie rental store that there was a small section, off by itself, marked “Blue-ray” DVDs. Of course, unless you have a Blu-ray DVD player you probably walked right by them. Right now there is hardly what you would want to call a ton of Blu-ray discs out there, but this is changing rapidly.

It’s a new and very exciting technology and one that is here to stay. Oh, by the way, that small section of the movie rental store will be getting much, much larger by the week.

One studio, for example, Warner Brothers has more or less bagged the HD DVD format in favor of a Blue-ray exclusive. This means more movies than ever are going to be coming out in that format from them. Others will follow suit.

The advent of the Blu-ray players and discs are nothing but exciting. We think you will find them exciting, too! You can purchase a quality Blu-ray player in the $300.00 price range. It will even enhance your current standard DVDs to High Definition playback. Make sure your current TV is compatible to receive the full benefits of Blu-ray players. If playing your CDs or burned CDs with MP3 files are an issue, make sure the model you choose has that option. Many even in the lower price brackets do.

HD Video Recording with Blu-Ray DVD Disk

The blu-ray disc format is supported by group of major companies like the Sony, Philips, Samsung and Hitachi. The purpose of the blu-ray BD disk format was to support the recording of the HD video, media applications and the movie distribution.

The blue lazer light of the blu-ray technology can squeeze the HD-video of more than 4 hours on a single sided DVD disk. The blu-ray DVD disk format has the latest technology and for next generation is the preferred choice for the storage removal. The blue lazer used in the blu-ray drives give better results and performance than the traditional DVD drives that use the red lazer. The DVD can store up to 4.7 Gigabytes of data, and the single sided blu-ray DVD disk can store 27 Gigabytes of data. The backers of bluray disk that work on the dual layer disk have capacity to store data of 50 GB. The bluray format gives high performance with the high-definition T.V displays. The quality of the picture in HDTV is greater than the picture display by the other traditional televisions.

There is tough competition between the traditional DVDs and the bluray format DVDs. The high definition DVD is backed by Toshiba & NEC. While the bluray disc format is supported by group of major companies like the Sony, Philips, Samsung and Hitachi. Now that the HP and dell are supporting the blu-ray technology, the sales of the Blu-ray discs will increase and will be the market leader. The DVD+RW efficiently compete against the formats of DVD-R and DVD-RW. Because of the low number of customers the DVD recorders and burners were forced in market even though they were not popular and accepted by the customers. The electronic products like the analog TV and DVD players are commodities. The movie industry as well as the consumers prefers the blu-ray media.

The purpose of the blu-ray BD disk format was to support the recording of the HD video, media applications and the movie distribution. The appearance of the blu-ray BD disk is similar to that of the Compact disk (CD) or the Digital Versatile Disk (DVD). Dual layer DVD can store 9 GB and the dual layer Blu-ray disk can store 50 GB of data. The wave length of the blue lazer used for blu-ray recording is very narrow. Therefore, similar physical space of the disc can hold more volume of data. The high definition multi-media interface helps to connect the media devices (projectors and high definition DVD players). 25 GB data can be stored on a single layer blu-ray disk and 50 GB of data on the dual layer blu-ray disk.

This recording and play back can be done on both the recordable BD-R & rewritable BD-RE disks. By using the BD-AV blu-ray format, the users can use standard definition or the high definition for authoring blu-ray disk that can be played in standalone blu-ray player. The standard definition can be recorded from the analog source. SD can also be transferred directly form the digital video camcorders. So, the high definition material of two hours can be stored on single layer blu-ray disc of 25GB.

The BD-ROM format fulfills the movie industry’s requirement for distribution of the “HD commercial videos” on the prerecorded BD-ROM. It has the features of the Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) and also supports the multi-channel audio, high definition, and features of network. NEC and Toshiba both developed the high definition DVD (HD-DVD) format. Both the blu-ray and the HD-DVD are quite different formats.

Brief Introduction to our CD DVD and Blu-Ray duplicators and publishers.

Hera Series – Entry-Level Category

The systems within the Hera Series are fully automated self-contained CD DVD duplicators with Blu-Ray disc options and do not require connection to a PC. The systems are completely standalone with synchronous duplication. The newest addition to the Hera Series is the LightScribe option, which enables you to copy and print by running the duplication job, then flipping the finished stack over and running a print job. Each system includes a 160GB internal HDD for storage (500GB for BD), and can be upgraded to larger capacities.

Zeus Series – Mid-Range Category

The systems within the Zeus Series are fully automated self-contained CD DVD publishers with Blu-Ray disc options and do not require connection to a PC. The systems are completely standalone with asynchronous duplication and printing highlighting the key features. Each system includes a 160GB internal HDD for storage (500GB for BD), and can be upgraded to larger capacities. The Network versions allow for connectivity into any local or remote network by connecting the Zeus system to a PC via high-speed USB 2.0 connection.

The Zeus Series Printer Autoloaders are fully automated and can be used with the inkjet, thermal, and dye-sublimation disc printers we carry. Each system includes a 160GB internal HDD for storage, and can be upgraded to larger capacities. The networking software comes standard and allows for connectivity into any local or remote network by connecting the Zeus system to a PC via high-speed USB 2.0 connection ju

st like the network version of the Zeus Publishers. Users can operate the systems directly from the connected PC or send image files to the Zeus HDD to operate later in standalone mode. Up to (4) different Zeus systems can be connected to the same PC and run simultaneously for those high volume needs!

Olympus Series – High-End Category

The systems within the Olympus Series are fully automated self-contained CD DVD publishers with Blu-Ray disc options and contain a fully embedded PC complete with Windows XP Pro and PoINT Publisher Software. The systems are completely standalone with asynchronous duplication and printing highlighting the key features. Because of its modular architecture Olympus Publisher with PoINT Software will adapt to your requirements and fit well into an existing networked environment. The software consists of the server component, which controls the actual recording process as well as a set of applications for the definition of the disc contents. The PoINT server controls the hardware and administers the job list. For optimum performance, the 2-drive systems include a 160GB HDD, 4-drive systems include (2) 160GB HDDs, and the 7-drive systems include a 40GB HDD for the operating system and (2) 250GB HDDs for storage.

Dual Printer Autoloaders

The Apollo Dual Printer Autoloader connects to an existing PC and can only be configured with (2) SpeedJet Inkjet Printers. The Apollo Dual H is a very simple and basic printing system and cannot queue print jobs nor be networked. The SpeedJet printer uses standard off-the-shelf HP ink cartridges, which makes consumables widely available.

The Zeus Dual Printer Autoloader can, however queue multiple jobs AND be networked into any existing local network in very much the same way as all other Zeus Series systems. Users can operate the Zeus Dual directly from their connected PC or from a remote PC on the network. The software is very intuitive and user-friendly. The Zeus Dual is compatible both the EnduraJet inkjet printer as well as the Teac P55C printer. The EnduraJet incorporates a 4-cartridge HP printer engine in which the cartridges are proprietary to All Pro Solutions.

Users can go with a Zeus Dual or Apollo Dual with only one printer, and then add the same model later on down the road when the volume increases.

Manual Tower Duplicators

The Tower Duplicator Series consists of standalone, manual-load duplicator towers ranging from 3 to 10 drives. The M255 towers are daisy-chainable, starting with the M255-PRO as the master tower and allowing the user to add on subsequent M255 towers. Up to 255 towers can be connected together!

The NEW LS towers consist of LightScribe drives which enable the user to copy their discs, then flip them over and print a label directly to the special LightScribe media. A full-featured disc labeling suite is provided with each tower and is compatible with multiple operating systems.

For the Blu-Ray Disc duplicator options, there are towers in 3, 6, and 10 drive configurations, together with an internal 500GB HDD for storage needs.

Flash Duplicators and Printer

The Flash Duplicator Series duplicators consist of SD memory card, USB drive, and CF (Compact Flash) duplicators. The SD duplicators are available in 3, 7, and 11 target configurations, while the Compact Flash (CF) duplicator is configured with 7 targets. The USB duplicators range from 3 targets all the way to a whopping 118 targets for the serious USB duplication needs! Also available, is the new P55C-ST6 Dye-sublimation Printer that prints on (6) USB Flash Drives at one time. The printer includes (1) Photo Ribbon set.

CD DVD and Blu-Ray Disc Packaging Systems

Operators wishing to wrap small to medium quantities of disc cases can now achieve a quality finish equal to the standard of more expensive finishing machines, with the Case Wrappers from All Pro Solutions.

High-Definition (HD) video playback is perhaps the most useful aspect of the next-gen formats. As HD becomes more mainstream (Sky launched there HD offering recently and more households are buying HD ready TV’s) the ability for disc formats to support it is imperative. Blu-ray offers space for 2hrs/4hrs respectively of HD video (different encodings will allow more and less) with space for interactive features still available.

The enhanced interactivity features are another step forward compared to DVD. By incorporating the java platform (called BD-J), blu-ray players can have dynamically changing interactive menu’s that can be updated via an internet connection built into the player. These updates can include extra subtitles tracks and promotional features not available at purchase. This could effectively eliminate the ‘special editions’ studios tend to use as users could simply download all the extra features they wanted though its not clear if this will be free.

The enhanced copy protection is one aspect you won’t notice as much but is very important. Blu-ray utilizes a variety of copy protection methods such as Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Advanced Access Content System (AACS). The DRM method used on Blu-ray is called BD+ which creates dynamically changing keys to protect the discs. This means that if a key is cracked only a select portion of the discs are compromised. The AACS can effectively disable players which are deemed ‘bad’. i.e. if copied discs are used frequently, the AACS could disable the player for the user and s

top it working even if bought by someone else. The final copy protection which may affect you is the Mandatory Managed Copy System (MMCS) which limits users to a set number of copies of discs by making the user register the ‘right’ to copy the disc.

Finally the blu-ray disc has been designed to be future proof. This means that by buying all the new equipment needed, you will not need an upgrade in the near future (5 yrs) as these next-gen formats evolve. Also TDK has announced work on a 200gb blu-ray disc (6 x 33gb layers) which will future proof the format even more.

This is just an overview of the benefits that blu-ray offers. There are many smaller improvements but the benefits listed above are the ones that you are most likely going to affect you.
