LOS ANGELES – “Alice in Wonderland” led the national home video sales chart for a second week Wednesday, while “Shutter Island” debuted at No. 2.

“Shutter Island” also bowed at No. 2 on trade publication Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ending June 13, surpassed only by fellow new release “From Paris With Love,” which also debuted at No. 3 on Nielsen VideoScan’s sales chart. “The Wolfman,” the previous week’s top rental, fell to No. 3.

In a week when new DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases were sparse, the only other major newcomer on the sales chart was HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Seventh Season,” which came in at No. 12.

An increasing number of Television series along with sitcoms are currently being released on DVD. More and more a increasing number of individuals are choosing to relish their favorite shows on DVD and it’s no mystery why. Your favorite TV series is more enjoyable on DVD and Blu-ray! Here’s why:

No commercials! Enjoy your favorite series without being interrupted. You spend almost Thirty percent of your viewing time enduring commercials, which currently occupy almost 18 minutes of every prime time hour. For a typical 20-episode 1-hour series, that’s a whopping 6 hours saved by watching on DVD. In addition, you’ll no longer have to subject yourself to those annoying advertisements flashing or dancing at the bottom of the screen that many networks like to put on through a display. And you might be taken aback to realize that watching a syndicated show means even more commercials, and they appear at the price of the original show, which is cut to allow for additional commercial time. You will not experience this predicament on DVD which preserves the original full length of the show

Watching a series on DVD gives you total control of your viewing experience. No holding out for a commercial to be able to go grab more snacks from the kitchen. You can pause and continue your favorite episode whenever you would like without stressing about missing an important scene. If you do not have time to complete an episode in 1 sitting, most DVD and Blu-ray players are able to recall where you stopped and allow you to resume where you left off the subsequent occasion you view it.

Having all of the episodes on DVD and Blu-ray allows you to watch a show at your personal pace. Watch an episode a evening or view the entire season in one go. If there’s a cliffhanger and you are positively dying to know what takes place next, you only need endure a wait if you decide.

TV on DVD and Blu-ray looks and sounds far better. In numerous cases, they have been remastered, cleaned up and the final results are stunning. You can see your favorite TV series like you have never seen them before.

In addition to viewing anytime you would like, you can view a show on DVD wherever you would like. Pop it into your notebook computer and watch on the plane or enjoy it on your Television as you lay in your bed.

Many of us have a favorite episode of a series — the one we can watch over and over again, without getting tired of it. Owning the display on DVD and Blu-ray means you don’t have to jump through the channels in hope of seeing that special rerun of your favorite episode.

See what you haven’t seen. DVD special features or extras, including interviews, commentary, alternate endings, deleted scenes and previously unaired episodes you will not see on TV.

Enjoy what you have missed. So maybe you never did have an opportunity to watch “Felicity,” “Dallas” or “Gilligan’s Island.” DVD gives you a second chance to appreciate those long-gone series.

Enjoy even more entertainment per dollar. Buy a movie, enjoy approximately 2 hours of video. Purchase a Television series, enjoy double or triple that amount. TV on DVD and Blu-ray delivers a superior entertainment value.

Whether it’s a long-lost favorite Television line, one you had missed, or one you have seen dozens of times, TV on DVD and Blu-ray affords a new way for you to enjoy the best Television programming, on your terms, and with the best quality possible.

The home theater experience is not quite complete without a Blu-ray DVD Disc Player. Mainly because Blu-ray players raises your entertainment level with glorious High Definition images and sounds. But which blu-ray player is the best one for you? Like DVD Players, different Blu-ray Players come with many different features – some may even require additional accessories, so choosing the right one is very important. Below is an outline of the common Blu-ray features to help you choose the right Blu-ray Disc player for your home entertainment setup.

High Definition – 1080p:

If you have purchased a HDTV set you are probably familiar with the terms 720p,1080i and 1080p. If not, basically what you need to know, is that 1080p is the highest video resolution available to you. And right now, Blu-ray players are the best source to get this resolution, even High Definition television broadcasts cannot compete with the visually stunning and clear images produced with a Blu-ray Player. Of course, Blu-ray Players alone do not give you these superior images, you will also need a High Definition TV set capable of displaying 1080p which will give you the clearest picture possible and this is what you should aim for. However, if you do not have a 1080p High Definition television, all Blu-ray Players have the ability to select the resolution that best suits your HDTV. A High Definition TV with a display of 720p or 1080i will still give you a remarkably clear picture.

High Definition Sound Quality:

The next big feature that draws people to the Blu-ray Player is AUDIO. Dolby Digital and DTS are the common formats you may be familiar with since these are provided on a DVD Player. Blu-ray has these formats plus superior new versions of them. First, there is Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD. They are an improvement over the standard Dolby Digital and DTS since they offer higher bit rates and more efficient compression which gives you better sound quality. And both are capable of 7.1-channel surround sound. Keep in mind, most movies produced today still only go to 5.1-channel surround sound, so if you do not have a 7.1-channel surround sound system, there is no need to go out and purchase one.

Second, is Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, which uses a “lossless” compression codec, which means once it’s decoded it is identical to the studio master. Providing you with the best possible sound, matching the movie audio you get in a theater. There is also PCM. This is an uncompressed audio format, which again matches the original studio master.

Not all blu-ray players support the new audio formats. Most can support them, but they are not required to. The three audio formats you will find in every Blu-ray Disc Player is Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM. Therefore, to get the optimal sound performance, it is wise to choose a Blu-ray Player that has one or more of the following audio formats: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD can be decoded internally in most Blu-ray Players. Players internally decoding DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio is rarer but the number is increasing. While decoding internally is great, you do need to know, not all Blu-ray Players that have built-in surround sound decoding have multichannel analog outputs. So a HDMI cable would be needed to take advantage of the Blu-ray Player’s internal decoding. If your home theater receiver does not have HDMI inputs, you will need to get a Blu-ray Player with multichannel analog connections.

Having a Blu-ray Player with these new Audio formats is just one side of the story. These new audio formats also need to appear on the Blu-ray movie disc. This is nothing to worry about, because since 2009 almost every blu-ray disc manufactured and released have at least one or more of these lossless formats (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and PCM).

Blu-ray Profiles:

Blu-ray disc have all the same bonus features that is on a regular DVD disc. Things like deleted scenes, alternate endings and trailers. But it also has special interactive features different than the DVD disc. Things such as Bonus View (picture-in-picture), online games, access to chat rooms and downloads. Not all Blu-ray DVD Players will support these features. Earlier Blu-ray DVD Players did not have to support any new “bonus features”. Three categories, known as Profiles, have been established to distinguish between the different types of Blu-ray DVD Players. Now, any Blu-ray Profile will play a Blu-ray disc but with different Profiles you get different extra features available to you. There are three types of Profiles.

Profile 1.0

Profile 1.0 is very basic with no extra features available. After Nov 27, 2007 all of Blu-ray DVD Players released were required to support Profile 1.1.

Profile 1.1

Profile 1.1 is the mandatory requirement of all Blu-ray DVD Players. Profile 1.1 Blu-ray Players have 256 MB of local storage. They have the picture-in-picture function, mostly refer to as Bonus View. This is used to show a smaller picture within the movie. Mainly used when a director or actor is giving commentary about a particular movie. This movie itself is being displayed in the larger picture. Obviously a secondary video and audio decoders are needed for the smaller picture. Most major studios now have this feature in all their standard Blu-ray releases.

Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE)

Includes all the features of Profile 1.1 with an increase in local storage to 1 GB. Profile 2.0, which is also know as BD Live, has the ability of an internet connection, usually through an Ethernet port. So it is capable of interactive features when playing a Blu-ray disc. Features such as movie-related games, downloading the latest trailers, chat rooms and other content. Most of the newer models are more likely to be Profile 2.0.

Online Streaming:

Some of the newer Blu-ray Disc Players offer online movie and music streaming from Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, Amazon-On-Demand and others. In order to use this feature you would need subscriptions to these places and a broadband internet connection. Some Blu-ray Players even allow you to add it to your home network, providing access to other digital content stored on your computer.

Final consideration:

The last thing you may want to look for in choosing a Blu-ray player is what other type of media can it play. For example, you are probably used to your DVD player being able to play CD-Rs or CD-RWs. Listening to MP3 or WMA files on your DVD player. Not all Blu-ray Players have these capabilities. Or they may be able to play MP3s on a CD but not on a DVD disc. You would have to look to see if the Blu-ray Disc Player has any of these capabilities.

In summary, here are the Key Points to remember when choosing a Blu-ray disc player:

- Does the Blu-ray DVD Player support Full 1080p Play Back?

- Do you have a HDTV capable of displaying 720p resolution or Higher. (1080p is the best)

- What Audio formats are supported by the Blu-ray DVD Player?

- What Audio Outputs does the Blu-ray DVD Player have?

- How are you connecting the Blu-ray Player to your Home Theater Receiver, via HDMI or multichannel analog connection?

- What Profile does the Blu-ray DVD Player have? (Profile 2 / BD-Live is the best option)

- What type of media and video formats can the Blu-ray DVD Player use? Does it play MP3′s? Can it play CD-R/RWs or DVD-R/RWs?

- Does the Blu-ray DVD Player have Online Streaming capability?

Answer all these questions and finding the right Blu-ray DVD Player for you will become a lot easier.

Roseanne (dvd) Review

Nominated for 25 Emmys and 14 Golden Globes, including three for Best TV Series – Comedy/Musical, Roseanne forever transformed the television landscape when it premiered in the Fall of 1988. Following on the heels of the upstart Fox network’s 1987 sitcom Married With Children (which Fox created with Roseanne and Sam Kinneson in mind), Roseanne took the traditional TV portrayal of a functional and happy American family and literally turned it on its head. The brainchild of Matt Williams, creator of Home Improvement (1991) and writer for such hit series as The Cosby Show (1984) and A Different World (1987), Roseanne broke the mold of the traditional sitcom family and replaced it with the quintessential ideal of dysfunction. Attempting to portray a more realistic version of the American nuclear family, Roseanne instantly struck a chord with television audiences, and the series skyrocketed up the ratings – remaining a regular in the Nielsen Top 10 for the first seven of its ten seasons…

Roseanne follows the lives a lower middle-class family living in a small Illinois town. The very definition of dysfunction, the Conner family is headed by quasi-trailer trash couple Dan (John Goodman) and Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). As Dan and Roseanne live out their less-than-ideal (yet loving) marriage, they struggle to deal with a host of problems such as lack of money, bad family relationships, and conflicts with friends and neighbors. Along the way, they deal with the typical growing pains that accompany the adolescent growth of their three children – Becky (Alicia Goranson, later replaced by Sarah Chalke of Scrubs fame), Darlene (Sara Gilbert), and D.J. (Michael Fishman). Roseanne’s younger sister, Jackie (Laurie Metcalf), is also a regular on the show, and she provides added comic relief as she struggles to balance her myriad career choices with her search for the right man… The early years of Roseanne are sitcom entertainment at its best, and the writers and cast alike, issue superb performances. However, the show probably lasted a season or two longer than it should have, which is sad. It’s like watching an old sports hero play just a few seasons past his prime…

The Roseanne DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the series premiere “Life and Stuff” in which television viewers are first introduced to the Conner clan. Roseanne must meet with Darlene’s teacher in order to discuss a probl
em of grave concern – Darlene’s incessant barking in the middle of class… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include “Dan’s Birthday Bash” in which Dan’s ideal night out is thwarted by a thug who picks a fight with Dan while he’s playing pool, and “The Slice of Life” in which Roseanne must deal with her guilt in having yelled at Darlene after Darlene is rushed into emergency surgery for appendicitis…

Acer 6920G Laptop – Will it play Bluray correctly?

I'm looking at getting a laptop and this one has caught my eye. I want it for playing Bluray DVDs.. I just want to check this will definitely play Bluray if I bought a Bluray DVD from a store?

I know it may make me sound a bit dumb seeing as it says Bluray but I know some people have been disappointed buying laptops that won't play HD DVDs.

Acer 6920G Laptop
* Blu-ray
* Full HD screen
* DVD player
* Finger print security
* Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 Processor
* 3Gb RAM
* 250Gb Hard Drive
* Windows Vista Home Premium
* Bluetooth
* Up to 512Mb graphics card

Will this play my HD Bluray DVDs without any problems?

I had a clear-out recently. The room at work affectionately known as the “Technology Graveyard” was bursting to the seams and it was time to reclaim some real estate.

Amongst the endless carcasses of PCs and Macs, semi working monitors and mysterious 19″ rack mounted boxes with names like “Finalizer” there was a piece of history that brought back many memories. The 4 units had fairly recognisable form factors -a rectangular box in a beige cream colour that has become shorthand for “hi-tech, functional, not sexy”. The rear of the box featured some laughably clunky SCSI ports and a standard 3 pin mains socket. No clues here. The front however was far more familiar, with a fairly recognisable optical disc tray and eject button. To the right was a substantial power button and just above this a very retro looking logo proclaiming “LaserMemory”. It looked like something that Hans Solo might have carried with him on his adventures – substantial and exuding power but yet painfully dated and retro, not quite steam punk but maybe “diesel raver”. The biggest clue however was printed neatly in the middle of the drive’s tray – a screen printed logo proudly proclaiming “DVD -R”.

Just in case the purpose of the drive had not been made clear, the designers saw fit to add, in plain text, the words “DVD-R Drive” in the top left hand corner of the drive itself. Yes, this was the first commercial DVDR recorder the world had ever seen. At the time it caused a storm and it’s fair to say started the process that revolutionised the optical disc industry. It was designed to be used by DVD authoring companies to burn masters for replication and also to write check disc DVDs to quality control the authoring process.

As it was pitched at companies who thought nothing of spending $250k on a PC to create DVDs this unit was pitched at a fairly ambitious $3500. Yes, that is correct. More than 100 times the price of a current burner for a unit that wrote discs at a whopping 1X. It took over 40 minutes to burn 1 disc. And the discs weren’t cheap either, coming in at over $15 each (that’s an expensive coaster). There were no other options, so if you wanted to burn DVDs at the turn of the last decade you paid the price. I was lucky enough to own a company that had the funds to purchase not one but four of these beasts and it formed the heart of our DVD duplication service. It was the most expensive DVD tower London had ever seen and it wrote 4 discs at once. Nearly 10 years later we again bought the latest in optical disc technology, this time Blu-ray.

The first BDR drive we bought cost over £200, less than 10% of the cost of the original DVDR burner. Using the drop in cost of the DVDR burner it follows that a BDR burner will soon be available for less than the cost of a Big Mac. Somehow I doubt that. It’s pretty obvious that the cost of Blu-ray recording technology is going to drop but the current evidence points to BDR being a far less pervasive format, destined to not only being overtaken swiftly by other optical (and possibly holographic) formats but also solid state memory. The meteoric rise of DVDR as the most ubiquitous recordable format on this planet is highly unlikely to be repeated in the near future. Certainly not by a format that will most likely be the last of the “Hans Solo” generation of 2D optical drives.

Kodak Archival Wallets Shield Optical Discs Against Uv Light And Heat Damage – Are You Backing Up Your Data?

This week, I received our first consignment of the new Kodak Archive discs sleeves. These thin synthetic sleeves have been silverized with a metal coating and guard against harmful UV Light and temperature – the packaging states they are a ‘metalised nano layered sleeve and shield against daylight and heat and are environmentally friendly.

There are two factors to think about when you are looking into the archive lifespan of recordable disc and in specific DVD-R, CD and Blueray media – their shelf life and their longevity after burning. You wouldn’t want to record a disc and then pop it undamaged into a case only to come back to it a couple of years later to get a number of cherished photographs or a backup only to find there were media read errors due to media degradation – no one, and nearly all the time this would be more than a disaster, having said that I have in my collection CD’s that I recorded more than 8 years ago and are still top quality – they were not even specifically archive disc and not stored in any very special environment!. Media shelf lifespan is something you have little power over but the quantities of disc media sold these days means that every disc you buy should be quite ‘fresh’ out of the packet.

Burning media for archive backup reasons is a separate matter from burning for production or short term data hand over between workstations. The most regular use of DVDR currently is for archiving of audio and video clips, photos, images, etc, this means that you have to be entirely positive the files can be read/write or played back in a number of years time without the media giving data reading errors.

Believe it or not but the definite life span of a recorded piece of media whether that be a Compact disk, DVD or Bluray disc media depends on storage condition, if humidity and in particular heat are not within factory specifications disc will deteriorate and data will be gone as the optical layer on these types of media is typically an organic dye. However, the guidelines for tolerance on these specifications are fairly forgiving as far as CD, DVD-R and Blueray disc media are concerned. heat as infrared and daylight as UV daylight are
1000
proven to have the most critical effect on disc damage, the most simple reason is to look at how a photo will fade if left in the sun on a desk – much the same can and will happen to your burned discs if left to experience from these 2 detrimental effects.

This is for example why museums prefer to deposit their exhibits contained by cardboard boxes often in temperature and humidity controlled environments, so short of packaging up your recorded discs in blackout materials and placing them in the loft inside a vivarium at a stable temperature you are looking for a different solution to safeguard your discs! The new Kodak sleeves are made of a synthetic type plastic material that has been layered with metal, on the packaging it is described as a ‘metalized nano finish}’ and it looks like the wallets have been sputtered with aluminum or a number of other silver coloured metal. This gives a sleeve or wallet that you can’t see through it’s this finish that keeps temperature out as well as hurtful UV daylight.

So to the results – my results having examined these up-to-the-minute sleeves from Kodak – The Kodak Archival discs sleeves – I am sure that they are going to be a superb addition to the archive plan for those clients and users that have sensitive and treasured data backed up onto DVD, CD and Blueray – they effectively block the daylight from reaching the discs recorded layer and are tremendously thin but resilient. The pouches can also be labeled or written on with a everlasting marker, all round an excellent product and at in the region of £6 for 50 well worth the price to make certain the future of your data, video or photos.

The future archival plan is something everyone should take into account but to be honest most can’t be bothered, so the next time you have some important data on a discs think carefully how you will save it just in case you need to get at it not just in some weeks time but perhaps more than a few years later. Disc drive storage isn’t the best answer to long term data backup, they are notorious for failing at the very moment you could do with that essential photograph or video – and guess what, you to media! People have said that DVDR and CD are on their way out, but in this day and age of everything coming in more and more bigger chunks of data and faster download speeds are we moving to a chuck away way of life in that people consume their download ‘fix’ and immediately scrap it or are there continuously going to be bits you want to retain? Well I say those important photo memories require to be kept back separate away from your PC, discs station or mobile phone (all of which will go wrong at some stage or be lost, stolen or broken and the present best choice to get that is to back it up onto DVD-R, CD or Bluray media and accomplish into the habit of storing these media in your own archival approach, all you need is a media wallet and a few of the Kodak media pouches and your photographic memories are safe for your decendants to look at and grin!

What's a good Blu-ray i could watch with my grandparents?

They really liked Pirates of the Caribbean and The Dark Knight. What's another one I could watch with them? Best answer to the one I end up watching.

If you feel you are ready to buy a Blu-ray player then it is well worth spending a little time getting to understand the basic Blu-ray features and terms. There are subtle differences between players and it’s best to know what you’re looking for.

Blu-ray is the standard high definition (HD) format now adopted by the whole domestic movie market. High definition means that the picture you see is at a far higher resolution than the older DVD standard.

DVD (NTSC) standard resolution is 720 pixels across by 480 pixels down the screen.

DVD (PAL) standard resolution is 720 pixels across by 576 pixels down the screen.

Blu-ray 1080i and 1080p refers to the best vertical resolution that Blu-ray provides which is 1080 pixels down and 1920 pixels across.

Most current LCD and plasma TVs will display the full Blu-ray resolution but it is best the make sure that your TV can achieve this. Firstly your TV must have an HDMI socket on the back and secondly check the user manual for reference to 1080i or 1080p. If either is missing you probably won’t be able to achieve full Blu-ray resolution. HDMI is the connection down which the HD video and audio is transmitted.

That’s the basics of HD explained, now for the more subtle differences between Blu-ray players.

Upscaling to 1080p via HDMI means that you are playing a lower resolution media like DVD on a Blu-ray player which is then scaled up to the 1080 resolution. The picture is slightly better than the original DVD if it were played through a DVD player but doesn’t reach full Blu-ray clarity.

As with DVD players, there are regions that players will cover. DVD uses regions 1 to 8 and 0 is region free.

Blu-ray uses regions A, B and C.

Region A: North and South America, South and South East Asia, including Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

Region B: Europe, Australiia, New Zealand, Africa, Middle East and Greenland.

Region C: Central and South of Asia including China; Russica and Mongolia.

Virtually all Blu-ray players have online functionality. This is provided either through a LAN or Wi-Fi interface to your internet router. Internet connectivity is completely optional as it is not always convenient to connect. If you do decide to get connected then there are several services available to you depending on the make and model of player you decide to purchase.

Sony’s BD-Live lets you download additional movie content.

Samsung and LG players provide access to YouTube movies and MKV files.

Panasonic has Viera Cast, it’s on demand TV service and, more services are appearing all the time as manufacturers bring constantly evolving services via the internet.

Now for me, online functionality is of very little advantage as I live out in the country and my bandwidth is quite poor but, for those of you who have access to good bandwidth then the online services available to you through your Blu-ray player are well worth it.

The features available are very extensive but I hope the ones I have shown you above are helpful and give you a good starting point from which to choose your Blue-ray player.

Now if you’re looking for a player that gives you great value for money then the Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray Disc Player is a great choice so why not take a look by clicking HERE.

The Simpsons (season 7) Dvd Review

One of the best television shows of its time, or any time for that matter, The Simpsons has resurrected the prime time animation genre. A blockbuster series populated with eccentric characters from the town Springfield, it helped launch the upstart FOX network from second-tier network to a major player alongside CBS, NBC, and ABC. This success opened the door for a plethora of animated series, such as The Family Guy (1999), Futurama (1999), and King Of The Hill (1997). With some of the best and most consistent writers in television, The Simpsons has spent an unprecedented length of time as one of the funniest shows on TV. That’s quite an accomplishment given the level of excellence it takes to manufacture so many episodes over such a long period of time.

The Simpsons (Season 7) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Springfield’s Most Wanted” in which John Walsh, host of the FOX series America’s Most Wanted, summarizes various theories as to who shot Springfield tycoon Montgomery Burns. This show originally aired prior to the season seven premiere that wraps up this plot twist, but it appears on The Simpsons (Season 6) DVD. Other notable episodes from Season 7 include “King-Size” in which Homer’s dream of working from home leads him to pursue a high-octane regimen of unhealthy binge eating (in order to get fat enough to qualify for company disability), and “A Fish Called Selma” in which Troy McClure seduces, and eventually marries, Marge’s sister Selma in enough to resuscitate his fledgling Hollywood career.

Right now all the talk in PC gaming is DirectX 10 Graphics. New hardware and new DX10 games have everyone buzzing about a new era in PC gaming. But is all the celebration a little bit premature?

Yes and no!

As with any new technology there is a lag time before everything catches up, before the new technology is truly integrated into the old, in this case gaming systems. The big question on everyone’s mind (especially gamers), how long will we have to wait before DX10 graphics delivers the goods?

In other words, how long is the lag time before performance (what you see in your games) catches up with the technology DX10 Graphics will ultimately deliver?

For the ordinary consumer who is not a techie or even a dedicated gamer, all this fuss about X10 Graphics can be downright confusing to say the least. Getting a handle on even the simplest terminology can be a challenge.

First, you have to understand DirectX is a Microsoft Windows technology that lets you have higher performance in sound and graphics when playing games and/or watching videos on your computer. In the past we have had different versions of DirectX… DirectX 8, DirectX 9, and with the introduction of Windows Vista we have DirectX 10.

DX10 Graphics gives us better performance and better looking PC graphics with clearer, higher resolution images with more shading and details. It simply means better overall picture quality and performance, a forward step to true realism in gaming.

At the heart of DirectX are APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), which can be oversimplified as a bridge or way for the hardware and the software to “talk” to each other. These give you multimedia applications such as (3-D) graphics acceleration, sound mixing and sound output and other functions.

We are now seeing higher performing DirectX 10 Graphics GPUs from top makers such as NVIDIA with their 8800 series, including the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX and GeForce 8800 GTS. These GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) will give you better gaming with greater image quality and performance. HD DVD and Blu-ray video playback is even possible.

Top gaming manufacturers like Rockdirect in the UK are now all carrying DX 10 Graphics in their gaming machines. You will also find many of the major gaming specialists such as Alienware, Vigor, and Sager sporting DX 10 graphics.

Present or upcoming games that will have DirectX 10 support include Crysis, Shadowrun, World in Conflict, and Company of Heroes.

Nor should you think DirectX 10 is solely for gamers; the general PC user will also benefit from better graphics and higher performance. For instance, the ability to play and enjoy HD DVD and Blu-ray video playback on their PCs.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of DirectX 10 Graphics is that it makes it much more easier for game designers and developers to create games. For a more detailed discussion of the technical side of this topic, you can try Microsoft Game Developer Presentations here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/aa937787.aspx

Or you can read this very good, detailed article on “The Future of PC Gaming” by Tim Smalley presented here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/11/30/directx10_future_of_p c_gaming/1

The question still remains – is DirectX 10 Graphics deserving of all the hoopala or fuss?

Yes, but it will be awhile before the true benefits are fully enjoyed by gaming enthusiasts and the general public. As more DX10 games are developed and as more powerful gaming hardware become available, the full potential of better gaming will hopefully be reached.

But there may be some catching up to do before we see the real benefits. Many gamers complain that presently most hardware is more suited to DX9 Graphics. Here’s a very interesting and detailed discussion of this issue done by X-bit Labs entitled: “DirectX 10 Games vs. Contemporary Graphics Accelerators” http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/directx10-games.ht ml

Implementing any new technology takes time, as old technology is gradually replaced by the new. Just compare it to say switching from VHS to DVD and now to Blu-Ray; keeping ahead of the latest technology takes some catching up time. DX9 Graphics will eventually lose ground to DX10 Graphics.

So it may be awhile before DirectX 10 Graphics delivers the full potential of the ultimate gaming experience, but there is little doubt this technology is the future of gaming. It may just take a little while before game developers and hardware makers get all their guns locked and loaded to give you that ultimate gaming experience.

How can I connect my Samsung Blu Ray player to the internet?

I have a samsung blu ray player that has an ethernet jack to connect to the internet…but my hub is downstairs and running a wire isn't an option. I have wireless throughout the house…is there a way to transmit the wireless signal to *something*, then run the ethernet cable from that to the blue ray player. Thanks. Look forward to hearing some ideas cause now I'm stuck.
