Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Design: While other Blu-ray players will attempt to look cool the Panasonic DMP-BD60 sticks to the philosophy of “actions speak louder than words”. In this case, performance speaks louder than looks as the disc player looks like any other rectangular, box-like device. The disc tray flips out from the center with a hidden SD card slot, USB port and a few playback controls. Panasonic have retained its predecessor’s remote with all the important buttons in blue with large buttons all round.

Specifications:The Panasonic DMP-BD60 offers Profile 2.0-compliance and supports high-resolution Blu-ray soundtrack formats. The disc player has on-board decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Essential with bit-stream output also available if you prefer the decoding to be done in your AV receiver. Connection-wise the unit offers an HDMI output, component video, an optical digital audio output and a stereo analog audio output. There is also an Ethernet LAN port for wired connections.

Features & Performance: While the unit retains the same features as its predecessor, the Panasonic DMP-BD60 does have several new features. For one, it supports VieraCast, which is Panasonic’s proprietary online content portal. While you need to connect the unit to the Internet via the Ethernet LAN port, the portal allows for YouTube, Picasa, weather, stock quotes and access to Amazon Video On Demand. The menu was very easy to navigate and use. Like its predecessor this new model delivers awesome Blu-ray performance. With virtually no jaggies and crisp visuals present the video quality is impressive. While the Panasonic DMP-BD60 does not offer many features (compared to other models in the market) it is extremely reliable and plays some awesome quality Blu-ray disc media, making it and ideal choice for the Blu-ray HD purist who would choose function over form any day.
